ABOUT DEER ANTLER HUNTING KNIVES OF MAINE

How George got into making knives...

In the early 90’s while walking in my back yard in Rangeley Maine, I found a deer antler frozen the Ice. It just so happened that I had a hunting knife with me which had a broken handle. While walking back to my house holding the deer antler next to my hunting knife, I envisioned how nice the antler would look on my knife blade.

I knew a knife collector in town and decided to ask him for advice on how I could turn this antler into a handle for my knife. As luck would have it the knife collector gave me some guidance and some very helpful advice on starting my project, then he let me use any of his tools that I needed in order to complete my project. My very first experience with drilling the antler was disastrous, of course I drilled right through the antler! My friend gave me another antler and this time stayed with me on my second try. When my project was competed I was excited and decided that I had a pretty good looking knife!

As I experimented and worked with many more antler knives, I soon was in touch with people by word of mouth and also through the local Sporting Goods store in my area. My knives were on display that same winter and I sold all of the knives that I had on display in the local Sporting Good’s store. Many people have been impressed with my knives and the word is out with friends and acquaintances to be, “on the lookout for shed deer antlers in the woods or in your back yard!” The Northern woods of Maine are certainly a handy place to acquire shed deer antlers.

Today, I show my knives at Sportsmen show events and have many displays in various locations as well as in my shop at my new location on RT 104 in Sidney, Maine. All of the blades that I purchase are only quality 440 Stainless Steel, 6 guage high-carbon stainless steel, and damascus steel. I use only shed deer antlers, which I am constantly on the lookout for but I do also have to buy antlers when my stock gets depleted. I only use ½ inch Brass stock for the guards and I make all the leather sheaths by hand to fit the different size and style knife and antler handles. Each and every Deer Antler handle is unique; no two Deer Antler knives are exactly the same.

To personalize, Knife Laser Engraving is also available and this makes a great gift idea!
